Importance of Healthy Hearing!

The average person waits about 7 years from the time they notice difficulty hearing until they proactively seek out help. Why do they wait so long when our ears are so important in our daily lives? They not only connect us to those around us but they help notify us of our surroundings. Perhaps they don't want to be seen as 'old', having a 'weakness', or believe that they can hear 'good enough'.

Research has shown hearing loss affects multiple facets of our daily lives. Many view hearing loss as more of an inconvenience, but it stems to many common problems. Human behavior is very social and suffering hearing loss imposes on our ability to stay connected to the world around us.  Research has even shown the correlation in hearing loss and cognitive decline such as dementia. This is because your brain loses needed stimulation because it's cut off from the world around.

Studies have also linked untreated hearing loss to:

  • irritability, negativism and anger
  • fatigue, tension, stress and depression
  • avoidance or withdrawal from social situations
  • social rejection and loneliness
  • reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety
  • impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks
  • reduced job performance and earning power
  • diminished psychological and overall health

Hearing loss isn't limited to just old age. People of all ages experience hearing loss. That's why it's important to have your hearing tested . If you or a loved one struggle with hearing loss, come see us at Memphis Audiology! Call us at 901-310-5983 to schedule and appointment!

Did you know you can take full control of your hearing aids through an app on your phone? For the most part, the latest hearing aids do a great job of automatically adjusting to your environment. Maybe you sat down to eat at your favorite restaurant and it’s particularly noisy. You can change settings on an app through your phone to really focus on that business luncheon or coffee with your friends. Background noise can make it challenging to stay engaged in conversation, but you can take command and hear the important stuff. Because remember, life is worth hearing! Call us today at 901-310-5983 for a hearing evaluation or browse our website for more information.
