Importance of Healthy Hearing!

The average person waits about 7 years from the time they notice difficulty hearing until they proactively seek out help. Why do they wait so long when our ears are so important in our daily lives? They not only connect us to those around us but they help notify us of our surroundings. Perhaps they don't want to be seen as 'old', having a 'weakness', or believe that they can hear 'good enough'.

Research has shown hearing loss affects multiple facets of our daily lives. Many view hearing loss as more of an inconvenience, but it stems to many common problems. Human behavior is very social and suffering hearing loss imposes on our ability to stay connected to the world around us.  Research has even shown the correlation in hearing loss and cognitive decline such as dementia. This is because your brain loses needed stimulation because it's cut off from the world around.

Studies have also linked untreated hearing loss to:

  • irritability, negativism and anger
  • fatigue, tension, stress and depression
  • avoidance or withdrawal from social situations
  • social rejection and loneliness
  • reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety
  • impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks
  • reduced job performance and earning power
  • diminished psychological and overall health

Hearing loss isn't limited to just old age. People of all ages experience hearing loss. That's why it's important to have your hearing tested . If you or a loved one struggle with hearing loss, come see us at Memphis Audiology! Call us at 901-310-5983 to schedule and appointment!

Do Your Hearing Aids Live in a Drawer?

Hearing Aid Drawer

It's not entirely uncommon for these life changing devices to end up in a drawer lost among trinkets and knick knacks. Here are a few ways to maximize the use of your hearing aids:

  1. Keep your hearing aids in an easy to access place. Somewhere you won't forget them.
  2. Make sure you have plenty of batteries kept wherever you are, whether it be at home, at work, and/or packed while traveling.
  3. We are creatures of habit. In your morning routine, include putting your hearing aids on right after you brush your teeth or another activity you do daily.
  4. Make sure your hearing aids are fit properly (We can help you there!). If they are uncomfortable, it's very likely you won't wear them on a day to day basis.
  5. If your hearing aids are broken, you definitely won't wear them. Bring them in for a checkup if you don't think they are working properly.
  6. Finally, if you don't think you are benefiting from hearing aids, you won't wear them. We had a patient who, after being fit with hearing aids, called to tell us about how he didn't remember that bags of chips made a crinkle sound. He loved hearing the subtle notes in his favorite music. It's a wonderful and noisy world out there! Don't miss out because your hearing aids live in a drawer!

At Memphis Audiology, we want to help you hear the life you love. This isn't always in the form of new hearing aids, but we also want to maximize the hearing aids you already have. Give us a call today at 901-310-5983 to schedule an appointment for all your hearing needs!
